Final year is almost done and suddenly everyone is a career expert. Your uncle says only an MBA is a real degree. Your cousin says her PGDM got her a better job. So who do you believe?
They are both a bit right. The PGDM vs MBA choice takes two years and often a large education loan. Skip the gossip and look at facts you can check. At BSchool Bridge, we compare 690+ B-schools on these numbers every day.
PGDM vs MBA Degree: What Each Qualification Means
An MBA (Master of Business Administration) is a degree. Universities award it, and so do institutes set up by law, like the IIMs.
A PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) is a diploma. AICTE-approved autonomous institutes award it.
The practical difference is mostly the syllabus. Universities update an MBA slowly. A PGDM college can change faster, within AICTE rules. Either way, you study marketing, finance, HR and operations for two years.
The Difference at a Glance
| Point | MBA | PGDM |
|---|---|---|
| Awarded by | University or IIM | AICTE-approved autonomous institute |
| Qualification | Degree | Diploma |
| Regulator | UGC, for universities | AICTE |
| Syllabus | Set by the university | Updated by the institute |
| Typical eligibility | Graduation in any stream, usually 50% (varies by college) | Graduation in any stream, usually 50%, with 45% for reserved categories at many institutes |
| Typical duration (full time) | 2 years | 2 years (1-year executive formats also exist) |
| Common entrance exams | CAT, CMAT, MAT, or a state or university test | CAT, XAT, CMAT, MAT, GMAT, or an institute test |
| Master's equivalence | Already a master's degree | Through AIU, for a set period |
The PGDM vs MBA difference is about who signs your certificate, not what you learn.

Is PGDM Equal to MBA? What the AIU Rules Say
Sometimes, yes. The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) keeps a list of two-year, full-time PGDMs. It treats these as equal to an MBA for higher studies. Each college on the list has a start and end date for this status.
There is a catch. The equivalence only holds while the college has valid AICTE approval and valid accreditation (NBA, AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS or SAQS). If either one runs out, so does the equivalence.
- UGC does not decide this. UGC NET rules ask PGDM holders to have AIU equivalence before they apply.
- Everyone has their own rules. Universities decide PhD eligibility. Companies decide hiring.
How to Check AIU Equivalence: 4 Steps
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1. Confirm AICTE approval | Check the AICTE portal |
| 2. Check accreditation | Note the NBA (or similar) end date |
| 3. Find it on the AIU list | Note the Equivalence Granted dates |
| 4. Get it in writing | Ask the college for its AIU letter before paying fees |

PGDM vs MBA Salary Comparison
Ignore the highest-package banner. Look at the median. FMS Delhi’s MBA median is ₹29.59 LPA. MDI’s PGDM median is ₹29.0 LPA. That is almost the same. Your salary depends on your college, specialisation, experience and skills, not on the words degree or diploma.

How to Judge ROI Before You Pay
Before paying the first instalment, check:
- The full cost, hostel included
- The median salary and placement rate
- Loan interest, plus two years without a salary
- Whether the jobs on offer are the ones you want
The ROI calculator puts the fee, the median salary and the loan on one screen.
PGDM or MBA: Which Is Better in India?
Neither one wins automatically. Which is better depends on what you want to do next.
| Choose a PGDM if you want | Choose an MBA if you want |
|---|---|
| A frequently updated course | Low fees at a good public university |
| Valid AIU equivalence | A university degree your employer asks for |
| Niche subjects like AI or analytics | A teaching or research path with fewer checks |
Going abroad? Foreign universities and companies judge each qualification separately.
Executive PGDM vs MBA for Working Professionals
Already have a job? Compare executive PGDM and MBA options on format and recognition. For an online PGDM, check AICTE approval for that exact course. For an online MBA, search for it on the UGC DEB portal.
Career Opportunities After PGDM and MBA
The careers after a PGDM and an MBA are largely the same: consulting, marketing, finance, product, analytics, HR and operations. There is no solid Indian data that says one name beats the other for career growth.
MDI Gurgaon and XLRI are among the best-known PGDM colleges. The IIMs and FMS Delhi are among the best-known MBA colleges.
